USEFUL INFORMATION

  • Health and Safety: an international vaccination certificate or a card from the World Health Organization is required.
    Three vaccinations are mandatory for Benin: Yellow fever, Meningitis and Typhoid.
    It is also advisable to be immunized against hepatitis and cholera.
    Ensure protection against tuberculosis, tetanus and malaria.
    Drink only bottled water, unless it has been boiled (at least 3 minutes). Or purify water with iodine tablets. Avoid ice in drinks, you can not be sure that it was made from boiled water.
    Travel: In most towns / villages you will find motorcycle taxis called 'Zemidjans'. You will identify the drivers by their colored shirts. This means of travel is the fastest, most convenient and the cheapest from one place to another in a city and between the different cities.
    However, the driving quality of the machines changes considerably, and breakdowns are not uncommon.
    Be sure to discuss the price with your driver before you accept. (The trip to Cotonou, for example costs about 250-400 CFA).
    Currency: CFA Franc (XOF).
    You can change the money on arrival at the airport. Many Cotonou banks are changing money and traveler's checks, including Ecobank. The Financial Bank will also let you withdraw money from your visa card. Credit cards are generally not accepted except in high-class hotels as well as in a few restaurants.
    Communication: The postal service is very reliable and available. Overseas phone calls are easy from Cotonou. Cyber ​​cafes are available in major cities. Electricity: 220 V
